While quite surprising and expressive in comparison to typical hojichas, this tea is not overpowering. A perfect hojicha to enjoy in winter.

Hiroki Matsumoto, the young farmer at Kaneroku Matsumoto Tea Garden is always challenging himself to create unique and unusual teas. This hojicha is indeed a distinct and standout hojicha, roasted from cedar wood from the famous Yakushima Island (Kagoshima Prefecture). The smokey flavor and scent will transport you into the earthiness of the cedar forests of Yakushima. While quite surprising and expressive in comparison to typical hojichas, this tea is not overpowering. A perfect hojicha to enjoy during the winter. What is more, it can also be enjoyed cold-brewed in the hot summer days! 

If you are one who likes to explore out of the box, this hojicha may be for you! In fact, this is an award-winning hojicha which received the gold prize in the Japan Tea Festival in the year 2018 (Concours de Thé Japonais - C’est bon le Japon 2018). Matsumoto-san has been very creative with his black teas, too.

A subtle mix between the flavor of Japanese roasted green tea and the delicate cedar wood smoked notes.

Tea amount: 3g
Water amount: 50ml
Water temperature: 95°C
Brewing time: 90 sec

This smoked tea can be enjoyed cold or hot. It goes very well with nuts or chocolate. You can simmer meat with it as well. Tea leaves and their strong flavor can be used as condiment or seasoning.
