Tea story

In the heart of Wazuka, Kyoto, a region with over 800 years of tea-growing heritage, the Gokou cultivar thrives under the careful hands of skilled artisans. This tea variety, developed for its deep umami and natural sweetness, is ideally suited to Kyoto’s humid climate and mineral-rich soils, producing some of Japan’s most refined matcha.

The journey of Matcha Wazuka no Mukashi begins with carefully nurtured tea plants that are shaded for four weeks before harvest. This shading enhances chlorophyll production, deepening the tea’s vibrant green color and boosting its L-theanine content for an exceptionally smooth and mellow taste. The hand-picked leaves are steamed to prevent oxidation, dried, and refined into tencha, which is then ground in traditional stone mills to achieve a luxuriously fine, silky powder.

Historically, matcha from this region was exclusively reserved for temple ceremonies and nobility, valued for its rich, lingering sweetness and creamy texture. Today, Matcha Wazuka no Mukashi continues that legacy, making it a perfect choice for usucha (thin tea) and koicha (thick tea), enjoyed in traditional tea gatherings or modern culinary creations.
