Tea Story

In Yunnan, some tea trees are left to grow beyond the scale of plantation farming. These are often referred to as old trees (lao shu) — plants that have developed deeper root systems and slower growth cycles over time.

This tea is made from the first harvest of early spring (zao chun), when the trees begin their annual growth. At this stage, the leaves carry concentrated sugars and a softer structure compared to later harvests.

The material is picked by hand, often in small quantities, then processed into black tea using traditional methods. The leaves are withered and oxidized slowly, allowing the natural character of the old trees to remain present. There is no heavy shaping or blending — just a careful handling of the leaf.

Compared to plantation-grown black teas, the result is less sharp and more continuous. The texture is thicker, the sweetness more integrated, and the flavor develops gradually rather than in contrast.

It is a tea shaped as much by the age of the trees as by the season in which it is picked.
