Tea Story

Most Japanese green teas are steamed, but kamairicha follows a different path. Instead of steam, the freshly picked leaves are pan-fired in iron vessels, a method more commonly associated with Chinese green tea.

This style developed in southern Japan, where tea producers adapted techniques to suit local conditions and preferences. In Shizuoka, Osada Tea Garden continues this approach on a small scale, working with organic cultivation and careful processing.

The tea is made from a single cultivar, shaped gently during firing rather than tightly rolled. The heat of the pan changes the character of the leaf, softening the sharper green notes and introducing a subtle roasted quality. The result is a tea that feels rounder and less grassy than typical Japanese greens.

Unlike steamed teas, which emphasize freshness and brightness, kamairicha leans toward warmth and softness. It sits closer to toasted grain and nuts than to raw greens, with a smooth, easy finish that makes it particularly approachable.
