Tea Story

Keemun is a relatively young tea by Chinese standards. It was first developed in the late 19th century in Qimen County, Anhui province, at a time when China began producing black tea for export.

Before that, the region was known primarily for green tea. The shift required not only a change in processing, but also in understanding how the local leaves would behave under full oxidation. Early producers adapted techniques from Fujian, refining them over time to suit Anhui’s climate and cultivars.

The result was a tea distinct from other black teas. It carried less weight than assamica-based teas, but more aromatic detail — often described as wine-like, with soft fruit and cocoa notes. Its character comes not from heavy oxidation alone, but from careful withering and slow processing that preserves volatile aromatics.

Keemun became one of the teas used in classic British blends, but on its own it remains quieter and more precise, shaped by both region and method.
