About

A gaiwan is a traditional Chinese brewing vessel made from three parts: a bowl, a lid and a saucer. Tea leaves are placed directly inside, where there is room for them to open. The lid holds them back as the infusion is poured and can be lifted between brews to catch the aroma rising from the warm leaves.

This gaiwan comes from Dehua, a region in Fujian, southeastern China, where ceramics have been made for centuries. Dehua became especially known for its pale porcelain, produced for homes in China and carried through old trade routes to tables much farther away. The individual workshop behind this piece is not specified, but it belongs to that long local tradition of useful objects shaped from clay.

Its warm champagne colour gives the classic form a softer, more contemporary feeling. Light moves across the gently shaped surface, shifting it from pale wheat to muted gold. Once tea is added, the quiet colour leaves space for the leaves and the changing shade of each infusion.

At 125 ml, the gaiwan is small enough for short, controlled brews. The same leaves can be returned to again and again, and each pour becomes part of the story: the first cup bright and aromatic, the next deeper, the later infusions softer and more settled.

The pleasure of a gaiwan comes through use. The hand learns how far to tilt the lid, how to hold the rim and when the tea is ready to pour. What first feels unfamiliar soon becomes one of the simplest ways to make tea.
