About

Hasami is a small pottery town in Nagasaki, in the south of Japan. Porcelain has been made there for more than four centuries, and the town became known for cups, bowls and plates created for everyday tables. These were objects meant to be reached for often, washed, returned to the shelf and used again.

Saikai Ceramics continues this approach with a matcha bowl that feels traditional in the hands and contemporary in the home. Its shape is low and open, with enough room for the bamboo whisk to move easily through the tea. Once the matcha is ready, the rounded sides sit naturally between both palms.

The black porcelain changes the way the tea appears. Before water is added, the powder lies bright against the dark base. As the whisk moves, the green deepens and a fine layer of foam begins to form. The contrast makes the small changes of preparation easier to see: powder becoming liquid, the surface becoming smooth, the bowl becoming warm.

With time, fine lines may appear in the glaze and gradually take on traces of tea. Each bowl begins with the same simple form, then becomes more personal through use — the mornings it has been part of, the hands that have held it and the matcha prepared inside.

How to Use

Before first use
Rinse thoroughly with hot water and allow it to dry completely before use.

Usage guidelines

  • Keep away from direct heat sources such as stoves
  • May be used with microwave 
  • Do not use with dishwasher
  • Do not use with oven

As the piece ages, the glaze may crack and stain — a process called kannyu.

To prevent tea stains, rinse after each use. Wash gently with mild, natural soap — avoid harsh chemicals like bleach.

Ensure the cup is fully dry before storing, as moisture can lead to unwanted odors or mold.
