About

Hasami is a pottery town in Nagasaki, in the south of Japan. Porcelain has been made there for more than four centuries, much of it shaped into cups and bowls intended for ordinary homes. Saikai Ceramics works within this local tradition, bringing established materials and techniques into pieces made for contemporary use.

Jatenmoku takes its character from the kiln. Tenmoku glazing relies on heat, minerals and the movement of glaze during firing, so the finished surface cannot be repeated exactly. Dark brown, charcoal and softer cloudy areas gather differently across each bowl, giving every piece its own balance.

The first character in the name, ja, is connected by the maker to sabi: the awareness that objects change and that their beauty is not fixed. This idea becomes visible as the bowl is used. Fine lines may appear in the glaze and gradually take on traces of tea, recording time rather than leaving the surface untouched.

The Hakuwan shape is wide enough for a bamboo whisk to move comfortably across the base. At 425 ml, it offers generous working space without feeling oversized in both hands. Against the dark glaze, fresh matcha appears bright and precise, making the preparation as visible as the finished tea.

Use & Care

How to Use

Warm the bowl with hot water, then empty and dry it. Add sifted matcha and water at the temperature recommended for the tea.

Whisk with quick back-and-forth movements, keeping the bamboo tips just above the base rather than pressing them into the porcelain. Hold the bowl in both hands when drinking.

How to Care

Wash gently by hand with mild dish soap and a soft sponge. The bowl may be used in a microwave, but should not be placed in a dishwasher or oven.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and sudden temperature changes. Tea may gradually colour the fine lines in the glaze; rinse promptly if you prefer to slow this natural change.
