About

The name Hekikai is written with the characters for blue-green and sea. It describes the colour rather than a painted image: blue moves across the bowl in changing depths, created through glaze and firing rather than drawn onto the surface.

The bowl is made in Hasami, a pottery town in Nagasaki Prefecture with more than four centuries of porcelain production. Saikai Ceramics works with Chojuro Kiln on this Hakuwan piece, joining a straightforward everyday bowl shape with a glaze whose final appearance depends on the kiln.

Heat causes the glaze to pool, thin and change tone. One bowl may carry a darker band, another a softer cloudy blue or a more visible transition around the rim. These differences are part of the process and make each piece recognisable without turning it into a fragile display object.

The rounded 425 ml form is designed to be used. There is enough space to move a bamboo whisk quickly without striking the sides, while the bowl remains comfortable to steady with one hand and lift with two. Over time, fine crackling may appear and take on subtle colour, adding another layer to the surface.

Use & Care

How to Use

Warm the bowl with hot water, then empty and dry it. Add sifted matcha and water at the appropriate temperature.

Whisk briskly with a bamboo chasen, keeping the movement light and avoiding pressure against the base. The wide interior works for both a fine foamed usucha and a smoother, thicker preparation.

How to Care

Wash gently by hand with mild dish soap and a soft sponge. Do not place in a dishwasher or oven. Microwave suitability is not confirmed, so microwave use is not recommended.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and sudden changes in temperature. Rinse soon after use and dry well. Fine glaze lines may darken gradually as part of the bowl’s natural ageing.
