About

Matcha behaves differently from ordinary tea. The whole leaf has been ground into a fine powder, so it needs to be mixed directly into the water. Left alone, the powder settles and forms small clumps. The chasen was created for this exact movement.

Its many slender bamboo prongs pass quickly through the matcha, separating the powder and drawing air into the water. With approximately 100 prongs, this whisk is especially suited to preparing matcha with a fine, even layer of foam. It is a good choice for traditional thin matcha, as well as the concentrated matcha base used for lattes and iced drinks.

Before use, the tightly curled tips are softened in warm water. The bamboo becomes more flexible, the whisk opens slightly, and the hand begins its quick back-and-forth movement. Within moments, the dry green powder becomes a smooth drink with a soft surface.

A chasen changes as it is used. The curled tips gradually relax, the bamboo takes on a gentler shape, and occasional prongs may wear with time. This is the natural life of the tool. It is made for regular preparation, for mornings at home and for the familiar sound of bamboo moving against the bowl.

Use & Care

How to Use

Before preparing matcha, place the tips of the whisk in warm water for one to two minutes. This softens the bamboo and helps protect the fine prongs.

Add sifted matcha and warm water to a wide bowl. Hold the whisk lightly and move it quickly back and forth in a loose zigzag motion. Keep the prongs just above the base of the bowl rather than pressing or scraping them against the surface.

Continue until the matcha is smooth and covered with a fine, even layer of foam.

How to Care

Rinse the whisk with clean water immediately after use. Do not use soap or place it in the dishwasher.

Shake off excess water and leave it to dry fully in a well-ventilated place. A ceramic whisk stand can help the prongs keep their shape while allowing air to circulate.

Never store the whisk while damp or return it to its plastic case after use, as trapped moisture can cause mould.
