About

Zouge is the Japanese word for ivory. Here it refers to colour: a warm, softly muted white that sits between bright porcelain and beige. The surface gives the bowl a gentler presence while preserving the clarity that makes pale porcelain useful for matcha.

The bowl comes from Hasami in Nagasaki Prefecture, where porcelain has been produced for more than four centuries. The town became known for practical tableware made to be used often. Saikai Ceramics and Chojuro Kiln continue that approach through a bowl whose shape is simple, generous and easy to live with.

The pale interior shows the tea without altering it. The fresh green of matcha, the size of the bubbles and the smoothness of the surface remain visible while whisking. The 11.5 cm opening gives the chasen space to travel, and the rounded sides guide the movement back towards the centre.

With repeated use, fine lines may develop in the glaze and slowly take on colour. This process, known as kannyu, allows the bowl to become less uniform and more familiar over time. The warm ivory surface provides a quiet background for those gradual changes.

Use & Care

How to Use

Warm the bowl with hot water, then empty and dry it. Add sifted matcha and water at the recommended temperature.

Whisk with quick back-and-forth movements, allowing the chasen to travel across the rounded base without scraping it. The pale interior helps you see when the powder is evenly mixed and the foam has become fine.

How to Care

Wash gently by hand with mild dish soap and a soft sponge. The bowl may be used in a microwave, but should not be placed in a dishwasher or oven.

Avoid abrasive cleaners, metal brushes and sudden temperature changes. Rinse promptly if you prefer to reduce staining in the fine glaze lines, then dry well before storing.
