About

These cups come from a familiar shape found across Japanese tables: the soba choko. It began as a small cup for dipping cold soba noodles into sauce, with straight sides that were easy to hold and a size that worked naturally beside a meal.

Its usefulness soon carried it beyond soba. The same cup could hold tea, sake, small portions of fruit, sauces or sweets. It became one of those simple household objects that rarely has only one purpose.

This set is made by Saikai Ceramics and decorated with five different indigo designs. The patterns feel related, though no two cups are the same. Set together, they create a table that feels collected over time rather than perfectly matched.

The cups are made in Arita, a town in southern Japan where porcelain has been produced for more than four centuries. Arita became especially known for blue decoration painted over clear white porcelain — a contrast that remains fresh and recognisable today.

At 200 ml, each cup is generous enough for sencha, hojicha, black tea or cold brew poured over ice. They also return easily to their original place at the table, holding soba sauce, a small dessert or whatever the meal happens to need.

Their charm lies in that flexibility. They can be brought out for tea, left on the breakfast table, shared between guests and used differently from one day to the next.

Use & Care

How to Use

Use the cups for green tea, hojicha, black tea, herbal infusions, cold brew or drinks served over ice.

Their shape also works well for soba dipping sauce, sake, fruit, sweets, condiments and small desserts.

How to Care

Wash with mild dish soap and a soft sponge after use.

Dishwasher safe.

Microwave safe.

Do not use in the oven.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and sudden changes in temperature.

Dry well before storing.
