Tea Story

This matcha comes from the mountain village of Haruno in Tenryu, Shizuoka — a quiet tea-growing area of steep slopes, forest air, and fields sitting around 300–500 metres above sea level. Here, the cooler mountain climate slows the growth of the leaves, giving the tea time to gather depth before spring harvest.

The cultivar is Gokou, one of Japan’s treasured shaded tea cultivars, loved for matcha and gyokuro. Under shade, its leaves turn deep green and develop the softness and richness that later appear in the bowl.

The tea is grown by Izawa Tea Farm and crafted by Osada Tea, a family producer working in the region since 1948. After harvest, the leaves are made into tencha and slowly stone-milled into fine matcha powder.

What makes this tea beautiful is the meeting of two worlds: a Kyoto-born cultivar and the wild mountain character of Shizuoka. The result is organic Gokou matcha with calm depth, vivid colour, and a soft, grounded presence.
