About

Katakuchi means “one-sided opening” in Japanese and describes a vessel with a single pouring lip. The form has long been used in Japanese kitchens and workshops for mixing and transferring liquids. Applied to matcha, it combines the open space of a chawan with the control of a small pitcher.

ORIGAMI developed this bowl for the way matcha is prepared today. The inside curves smoothly towards the base, allowing the bamboo whisk to travel freely without catching in a corner. Once the tea is ready, the reshaped spout helps carry it out to the last drop and reduces drips along the side.

This makes the bowl useful beyond matcha served directly from the chawan. A concentrated whisked tea can be divided between tasting cups, poured over milk for a latte or combined with sparkling water. The generous 450 ml full capacity gives enough room to whisk quickly without splashing.

The bowl is made in the Mino ceramic region of Gifu Prefecture, one of Japan’s major centres of everyday pottery. Kinu White is named for silk: the glaze has a smooth pale surface with a gentle lustre that changes slightly with the light. The glaze reaches the rim and varies from piece to piece, preserving some of the unpredictability of kiln firing within a vessel designed for frequent use.

Use & Care

How to Use

Warm the bowl with hot water, then empty and dry it. Add sifted matcha and water at the temperature recommended for your tea.

Whisk using quick back-and-forth movements, allowing the chasen to follow the rounded base without pressing into the porcelain. Drink directly from the bowl or use the pouring lip to transfer the matcha into a cup, milk or sparkling water.

How to Care

Rinse soon after use and wash with mild dish soap and a soft sponge.

Dishwasher safe.

Microwave safe.

Heat resistant up to 120°C.

Do not use in the oven or over direct heat. Avoid sudden extreme temperature changes.
