About

A gaiwan is one of the simplest ways to brew tea. It is made from three parts — a bowl, a lid and a saucer — each with a clear role. The bowl gives the leaves space to open. The lid holds them back as the tea is poured and keeps the aroma close between infusions. The saucer supports the warm vessel in the hand.

This version keeps the traditional form almost completely undecorated. Clear white porcelain is finished with a single blue line around the edges of the bowl, lid and saucer. The detail is small, but it brings the three pieces together and gives the gaiwan a recognisable place on the tea table.

White porcelain is especially useful when learning about tea. Its pale interior shows the true colour of the infusion, from the light green of a spring tea to the warm amber of an oolong or black tea. Its smooth glazed surface does not hold on to strong aromas, so the same gaiwan can move easily from one kind of tea to another.

At 155 ml, it offers enough room for the leaves to open while keeping each infusion small enough to taste closely. The first pour may be light and fragrant, the next fuller, the later cups softer. With time, the movements become familiar: lift the lid, notice the aroma, pour, taste, and return to the same leaves once more.

Use & Care

How to Use

Warm the gaiwan with hot water, then empty it. Add loose tea leaves and pour in water at the temperature recommended for your tea.

Place the lid slightly off-centre, leaving a narrow opening. Hold the bowl by its rim, secure the lid with one finger and pour the full infusion into a cup or fairness pitcher. Brew the same leaves again, adjusting the time as their flavour develops.

How to Care

Rinse shortly after use and wash gently with mild dish soap and a soft sponge.

Hand washing is recommended. Avoid abrasive cleaners, direct heat and sudden temperature changes. Allow the bowl, lid and saucer to dry completely before storing.
