Tea Story

Known in Chinese as Rou Gui ('Cinnamon Bark'), this is one of the most celebrated cultivars of the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian. Unlike flavored teas, its cinnamon-like character comes naturally from the cultivar itself, not from added spice.

Rou Gui rose to prominence in the 20th century and is now considered one of the defining teas of the Yancha tradition — Wuyi 'rock teas' grown among steep cliffs, mineral soils, and narrow valleys. These dramatic conditions create slow-growing leaves with density and structure.

After harvest, the leaves are withered, shaken, oxidized, and carefully charcoal roasted. Roasting is essential to the style, helping stabilize the tea while deepening texture and bringing forward the cultivar’s naturally warm spice profile.

Rou Gui is prized for combining strength with elegance. It can be bold and aromatic when young, then rounder and deeper with rest. Across infusions, it often reveals why Wuyi teas are considered among China’s most complex oolongs.
